St. Patricks day...

We had a really fun St. Patrick's day.

This year I am trying to beef up our holiday traditions and our "must do's" were severely lacking on this fabulous green holiday. For the last bunch of years we usually have green french toast for dinner and the kids get green shirts to wear all day!

I have one requirement for any new tradition that I add... it MUST be something I can easily do EVERY year. I don't want to start anything TOO crazy that will become burdensome in years to come.

So along with the traditional new $5 green shirts my school age kids got a "lucky penny" to carry in their pockets all day...

The day before I whipped up little bags full of gold goodies with a note on the back of the tag to put in the kids school lunches. Can I just say I LOVE knowing how to use photoshop elements...it makes creating quick tags like these a snap! I even made one for Travis and stuck it on his dashboard for him to find when he left for work.

The kids ate Lucky Charms for breakfast....they all thought this was super exciting because we usually buy the off brand bagged cereal so eating the real Lucky Charms was such a treat! (like I said...totally doable every year!)

Bailey came home from school with this super cute leprechaun mask. She said that her class walked around the halls at school looking for "Lenard" their class leprechaun with their masks so that he wouldn't know it was them! She also said that Lenard put a trap on the bowl of treats on her teacher's desk...so that when she ate a treat from the bowl it would turn her toe green...sure enough...when her teacher took off her shoe and sock for the kids her whole big toe was GREEN! Bailey thought it was SUPER funny!

For dinner I decided to branch away from our usual green french toast. I found a recipe for a yummy all natural green fruit smoothie. It was a hit! (4 C baby spinach, 1 1/2 C orange juice, 1 banana, and 2 C any light colored fruit. I used frozen peaches, mangoes, and pineapple.) You couldn't taste the spinach at all and it turned the smoothie a fabulous green color with out the need of food coloring!

I also prepared pasta salad, a family favorite, using Wacky Mac a rainbow colored package of noodles. My friend made green rolls for our families and I prepared the rainbow jello for both families. The jello was AWESOME to look at and turned out just like the pictures on the recipe, however it wasn't much fun to eat. It had the consistency of jello jigglers...kinda tough and thick. This was also a bit time consuming as you have to wait for each layer to set up...had it been better to eat it would totally be a new tradition...but I'm thinking this might have to be a one time thing!

We finished off our dinner with Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream for dessert! All in all I am pleased with the new traditions that I added.

ps...The only one that we will be doing that we didn't do this year is hiding the leprechaun treasure box in the moon light the night before...my box wasn't quite ready in time. My sister sent us this idea a few years ago and the kids love it so check back next year for that one!

getting organized...

My brain is full!
Seriously...if I tried to sit down and write out all the daily weekly important big little teeny tiny things I have to keep track of it would take all day! One thing I have noticed with the addition of child number 5 in our home is that my mind has a hard time keeping track of the little things. Things like when the last time that I washed the sheets, or the last time I mopped the floor. I wish I could say that having a scheduled day that I just remembered worked, but things always seem to come up and it gets postponed and then I forget. I don't know how many times I have thought..."I will just do it tomorrow!" and then tomorrow comes and life gets busy and before you know it I haven't mopped the kitchen in 3 weeks!

(quick peek inside my mind: Sometimes when I know I have a whole house to clean I end up just sitting there doing nothing because I don't even want to get started. Somehow in my mind I have to get it ALL done THAT day and I can't even enjoy my down time because I feel guilty for not having all my chores done!)

So today I sat down and tried to tackle my cleaning schedule. I have things I like to do every week, every other week, once a month...and I would like to try and attempt some Spring Cleaning this year. So I decided to utilize Google Calendar on my computer. One thing I do know is that I am really good at checking my email! So google calendar will send me an email every day reminding me what I have decided to clean that day. You can even set stuff for every other week, or once a month too! I also scheduled one area of the house to try and spring clean each week. I hope that by giving myself the whole week it will actually get done! I also hope that by having just a few things to do each day I won't feel overwhelmed because everything has a scheduled time to get done!

Wish me luck!

i did it....

To celebrate turning the big 3 0 I did something that I have wanted to do FOREVER!! I went skydiving! It was such a thrilling experience...I might just have to go again sometime!

We climbed to 12,500 feet in the air. Had about 60 seconds of free fall before the chute opened. It was pretty cold and the air kinda took my breath away, but it was an amazing experience!
(I paid the extra $ so that I could have video and pictures...SO worth it!)

Right after we jumped out of the plane we did a bunch of flips...CRAZY!!

When I was 18 I went with my Uncle Bruce to go skydiving. We went through the training and got all geared up, but they had to cancel because the winds were too strong. Ever since then I have wanted to go, but the last 12 years have been full of school, marriage, babies and more babies...So today was a dream come true! I just might have to make it something I do on milestone birthdays! The moment I was on the ground I wanted to do it again!!

lucky...

Still plugging away at 07-08...When I saw this new kit I knew I had the PERFECT pictures for it! She also just released a few new templates...I LOVE using templates. It makes scrapping a snap! This is one of my new favorites!!

life is like a carton of ice cream...

This afternoon I sit here looking at blogs, watching an old movie called A Star is Born starring Judy Garland, and eating a HUGE bowl of ice cream. As I was scooping up my ice cream (and not just any ice cream... Butterfinger and Chocolate Peanut butter Cup to be exact) I noticed that all the yummy candy bits always seem to be at the bottom of the carton. Those last couple bowls of ice cream can be the BEST EVER!! I mean seriously folks if you could just taste the yummy goodness I am experiencing right now you would just die!

Sometimes life is like a carton of ice cream...

This got me thinking about tomorrow...tomorrow I will be 30! Dun dun daaaaa......the big 3 0! Lets be clear that I am not one of those gals that freaks out as I grow another year older, but 30 is a pretty big milestone. I kinda feel like I am about to graduate into adulthood. In your 30s people take you seriously. Your not considered a greeny in life anymore.

In some ways I feel like I have been 30 forever. Because I have SO MANY kids people have thought I was in my early thirties for years! I always love the look on peoples faces when they find out how old I really am...then they ask how old my oldest child is and you can see them do the math in their heads...I always laugh to myself as I try to guess what they might be thinking...Yes...I was married at 19 and had my first baby at 20!! I'm sure the 10 years that I was in my 20s will forever be remembered as the baby period for me. Each one of my sweet babies were born in my twenties. Now as I look ahead at the 30s looming before me I wistfully try to imagine what I will look back on them and think. Hopefully it will be 10 years of fun memories filled with young healthy growing children... trips, games, and cozy time spent together.

"So what does this have to do with ice cream Heather?" you might be thinking...well, I'll tell you... I feel like I am looking down into a delicious carton of ice cream that is slowly emptying. The first few bowls were quite enjoyable and satisfying, but now I am getting to the good stuff. The ribbons of peanut butter and the swirls of candy bits are waiting patiently near the bottom to be enjoyed...even savored! I can't wait for what lies ahead in my life. I have been SO blessed! I can't imagine life getting better, but it will...of that I am certain!!

So tomorrow as I start a new "bowl" in my life I will remember with fondness my life thus far and watch with anticipation as each new scoop/year is slowly added...

For...
life is to be filled with your favorite things
life is to be smothered in service to others
life is to be savored one scoop at a time
life is to be SWEET!!

(oh ya... and on Saturday I am going Sky Diving...I will scream the whole way down!! "I'm 300000000000000000000000!!!!)
