read-a-thon...

Okay...don't get me wrong...I LOVE to read...I hope that my kids will love to read too! It opens new and exciting adventures with out ever leaving your home.

At school they are having a jazz read-a-thon. Each kid is supposed to read a certain number of minutes each day. If they reach their goal as a school a Jazz basketball player will come to the school and read to them. In Noah's class they will have an ice cream party and depending on how many minutes they read they earn their ice cream stuff:
200 minutes=bowl
300 minutes=spoon
400 minutes= 1st scoop...etc...

Noah is supposed to be reading an hour a day! He is in 1st grade! 1 hour seems crazy to me! Zach is supposed to read 40 minutes a day! Now here is my problem with this...when are we supposed to get all this reading done? It would be one thing if my kids were older and could read that long on their own, but they still need my help. Especially Zach! So on top of cleaning, laundry, cooking, feeding a baby, and homework, I now have to make more time to sit and read with the kids. I would love to be able to sit down for a few hours everyday and read to the kids, but the reality is that there are other things that need my attention too! Every night I sit and read a few chapters out of a book to the boys. Right now we are reading My Side of the Mountain. I thought we were doing pretty well reading wise...Well...I am glad that the read-a-thon is just for a short time!

Hey...I'm just being honest!

That is INSANE! I have a hard time with 20 minutes for each of my kids, I can't imagine more than that. You would have to extend their bedtime to be an hour later just to fit in reading...ya right!

i agree with you on this one. we were having a hard time conquering 20 minutes a day with my Kindergarten gal. i love reading but when mom has to assist, it does make it harder to get to. i'm also glad it's only a week or so. good thing - but all in balance, I suppose.

Yeah, the read-a-thon is crazy and competitive. We always counted our scripture reading and any time they were looking at books on their own. Once a kid turned in his minutes and it worked out to be 5 hours a day...yeah right!

That is nuts! I've heard horror stories of young kids having ridiculous amounts of homework and such. Not looking forward to that day.

Yikes! When i student taught, they had the second graders read an hour a day to earn a special picnic and you would see the funniest notes from home. One mom sent her little boy to school with a note that looked something like this, " I read to jimmy (cant remember the kids name) every street sign on our way to school. That took at least 20 min."
I cant imagine how you could fit all of that in!
I times like that, I almost think the polygamists are on to something... 7 other moms to help out doesn't sound so bad.
Yeah right!

AMEN! As if January isn't dreary enough . . . I remember last year, the day that the read a thon ended, Tyler walked in the door, and with a HUGE sigh, said, "IT'S OVER!" and I completely echoed his relief!!!

Yikes. That really is intense. Even during our read-a-thons they still only ask us to read 20 min. a night. The kids are welcome to read more if they want. That would probably not happen in my home. Good luck with that one!

You aren't the only one, Heather. I have come to dread the Jazz read-a-thon. And my child can now read to herself. Hey...I'm just being honest...:)
